Off To See The Doctor

Published by Michael at 12:54 pm under General

Guess they don’t like it when your blood pressure shoots up, your face turns red, you get dizzy, and your heart races and thumps. So I am off to be examined this afternoon. I am sure it is a combination of stress, eating habits, stress, lack of exercise, and stress. We will just have to see what they do to me. Probably more medication. Too bad they won’t prescribe a few weeks on a deserted island somewhere.

Worse than medication I am sure the doctor is going to tell me to get back to exercising. Hey, I have a membership to the gym and carry around the card. Isn’t that exercise enough? I figured that by carrying the card in my pocket I would get healthy by osmosis. No?

And what are you telling me, that I need to stop eating Tornadoes (those little rolled up taco things) for lunch from the gas station? But I love gas station food. Anything that has a shelf life longer than the average expected life expectancy of the US population has to be good for you, doesn’t it? If those preservatives keep the food from going bad, should they preserve me too?

Ah well, I am sure the doctor will differ in her opinion. So I will go and be poked, prodded, pee in a cup, and maybe have leaches attached. Sounds like a great way to spend the afternoon. See, told you I was dizzy.

At least the leeches should help reduce your blood pressure.

Hope all goes well and the doctor doesn’t have to prescribe any drastic lifestyle changes. Feel better.

@Haley – Thanks for the note!

The doctor said that basically I am an overstressed wacko. Blood pressure, with medication, was 148 / 92. So she is putting me on more medication. And an anti-depressant / anti-anxiety drug. Said it sounds like I am having anxiety attacks. And that my sarcasm is no longer softened by humor. I think I said something sarcastic then….

Seriously though, I am now on lots more meds and should be a zombie soon.

    Michael,

I am new to your blog, but I couldn’t help but take an interest in your post about the blood pressure. I was diagnosed several years ago with high blood pressure. In fact, at the time, I was a walking stroke with a reading in the emergency room of 212 / 110 with a pulse always over 100. I smoked and drank and carried on like I was a teenager on his way to hell. I ate what I pleased and weighed in over 200 pounds. The real problem was that I was in my middle 50’s then. My doctor shook his head and I think he didn’t expect to collect on his bill.

Well, needless to say I had to change that real fast. My wife found me in bed at one in the morning and I hadn’t been breathing for god knows how long. I was taken to the intensive care unit where I remained for 11 days. I was diagnosed with all kinds of diseases, C.O.P.D. in the lungs, artery blockages (I had a by pass on my right leg performed 2 months later) and of all things, high blood pressure which requires 3 medications per day. I began walking a treadmill daily, much to my dismay, lost some weight when I quit drinking, and quit smoking. Today I am much healthier, but I still have the high blood pressure, which is with me for life.

The reason I am writing so much about this is that I hope you take your high blood pressure seriously. It’s a killer. A lot of guys don’t, and they are no longer with us. I want to read your blog for many, many more years.

Sorry about the length, but thought it important. I’ll be back for more of your blog, I like it and your easy style of writing.

@Cindy – thank for the note. Sorry, no leeches.

@Robert – Thanks for the long note! I appreciate the thought and interest. Things are a bit better, although I am on lots of medication. Hopefully with some changes in lifestyle and such I can reduce some of that. I really don’t want to be dependent on drugs to keep my system regulated. I have to for now, but I am determined to change that.

And again, thanks all for reading and staying with me while I was away “adjusting” to my meds.
