Memorial Day and Weekend

Published by Michael at 9:02 am under Politics

Memorial Day Manassas StatueFirst of all, no matter which side of all the different debates you are on, you should take a moment to thank those who have given their all for our country and your community. Soldiers, sailors, pilots, marines, firefighters, rescue workers, navigators, crew, staff and everyone else - my hat is off to you. We may not always agree on the politics behind the actions, but I always agree on support of our men and women who serve. Thank you for all that you do.

And second, I hope you all have a great weekend and a great memorial day. Get out in the sun, enjoy the time with friends and family, and kick off the un-official start of summer in a great way.

    Memorial Day seems to be one of those holidays that we look on more and more as an opportunity to throw a party (barbecue), spend some time by the pool — it’s often called the official beginning to summer. Less emphasis is placed on it’s true meaning.

    I wrote a poem to honor our military past and present and it’s on my blog for the weekend. I hope you have a chance to visit and read it.

    Thank you for remembering and honoring our soldiers!

    Yes and thanks for the reminder, I want to extend my thanks especially to all those that serve as volunteer firefighters, EMS and rescue services.

    @Margaret - Excellent sentiments. I agree wholeheartedly. I really enjoyed your poem. I hope it gets lots of exposure.

    @Pobept - Right on. I lost a good friend of mine who was a fire fighter this year. He was one of the 9 Charleston firefighters who all died when the roof caved in on a fire they were fighting. Brave men all.

    I’ve always had an affinity for Memorial Day. Growing up we called it Decoration Day, because that was the time that we went to the cemetary to decorate the graves of our grandparents and misc loved ones. I’ve since found out that Decoration Day was the original name for Memorial Day. Our family always took it a step further to our loved ones that had died before us and not necessarily in the service of our country.

    What this has caused in my life is a great love and appreciation for cemetaries. I love the history and the somber peaceful feeling when I visit a cemetary.

    Thank you for your post.

    @Linda - Excellent sentiments!

    @Carla - As Peter S. Beagle’s book was titled, “A Fine and Private Place”. I too find cemeteries very calming. There is a beautiful one here in Charleston called Magnolia that dates back before the Civil War. There are some amazing monuments there. And the crew of the Confederate submarine Hunley is buried there as well.

    @Diane - agreed, super heroes!

    Memorial Day should be a quiet day of remembrance. It takes a lot of guts to be a soldier in today’s day and age.

    Happy Memorial Day everyone,

    Barbara

    @Barabara - agreed that it takes a lot of guts to become a soldier. I am grateful, and often amazed, at the men and women who sign on these days. Thanks to every one of them!
