@Barabara - agreed that it takes a lot of guts to become a soldier. I am grateful, and often amazed, at the men and women who sign on these days. Thanks to every one of them!

Memorial Day should be a quiet day of remembrance. It takes a lot of guts to be a soldier in today's day and age.

Happy Memorial Day everyone,

Barbara

@Linda - Excellent sentiments!

@Carla - As Peter S. Beagle's book was titled, "A Fine and Private Place". I too find cemeteries very calming. There is a beautiful one here in Charleston called Magnolia that dates back before the Civil War. There are some amazing monuments there. And the crew of the Confederate submarine Hunley is buried there as well.

@Diane - agreed, super heroes!

I've always had an affinity for Memorial Day. Growing up we called it Decoration Day, because that was the time that we went to the cemetary to decorate the graves of our grandparents and misc loved ones. I've since found out that Decoration Day was the original name for Memorial Day. Our family always took it a step further to our loved ones that had died before us and not necessarily in the service of our country.

What this has caused in my life is a great love and appreciation for cemetaries. I love the history and the somber peaceful feeling when I visit a cemetary.

Thank you for your post.

@Margaret - Excellent sentiments. I agree wholeheartedly. I really enjoyed your poem. I hope it gets lots of exposure.

@Pobept - Right on. I lost a good friend of mine who was a fire fighter this year. He was one of the 9 Charleston firefighters who all died when the roof caved in on a fire they were fighting. Brave men all.
