One of the Mirriam-Webster dictionary’s definition for “fetish” is an object of irrational reverence or obsessive devotion. For me, that fetish is unusual cars. Nope, can’t be some normal super car or muscle car. It can’t be the any of the standard star cars or status symbols. To most everyone’s amusement, I like unusual cars.
I have fallen in love with MG 1100s, with Triumph TR250s, and BMW 2002s. (Not the year silly, the model!) And, at the moment I am searching for a late model MG B GT. I will find the one I want, but in the meantime something else has caught hold of my attention. For some odd reason the venerable VW bus is creeping into my consciousness.

Now I know they are not glamorous and I know they have their problems. And I really don’t need that much space, and I am used to driving much smaller cars. But man, they are just plain cool. I would love to tool around town in a VW camper or transporter and be able to just hang out in it when I get somewhere. I could set up a little desk or something and have a totally portable office. Or maybe take it camping. You know, I have never been camping in my entire life - i fled from Boy Scouts before ever having to brave the outdoors.
The air-cooled engines in the “real” buses is a thing to behold. Noisy, underpowered, and finicky in the South Carolina heat, it would be one of those proverbial labors of love. Although, with the correct add-on parts and tuning, they can be made to pack a bit of a punch. Would take a bit of work to get one of them to really hold up to the way I like to go around corners though - even my MINI used to look at me we suspicious eyes for rounding up a bit too aggressively.
But when you come to think about it, I never have owned a VW product. That is an awfully big hole in my automotive resume, isn’t it? Not sure I can let such a travesty continue for too much longer.

This would be funny if it wasn’t true or if she wasn’t a major contender for Vice President of the United States. As it is, this is scary. And the fact that she was chosen, and that she still keeps up this misguided argument, forces you to call into question the judgment of the man who chose her — John McCain. No wonder he wants to postpone the debate!

Someone, please tell me this is a joke. I get it! Maybe this is really Tina Fey!

Tomorrow, September the 21st, is Peace One Day. There is a local celebration here in Charleston, and there are also events planned for all over the world.
Jeremy Gilley, a British journalist, birthed Peace One Day in 1999. He set out to document efforts to create an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date and spent two years traveling the world to make this happen. In 2001, Peace One Day achieved its primary objective. United Nations General Assembly resolution (A/Res/55/282) was unanimously adopted by UN member states, formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace, fixed in the global calendar on 21 September-Peace Day. POD is a non-profit organization, impartial and independent of any government, political persuasion, corporation or religious creed. International Peace One Day information is available at www.peaceoneday.org. On a global scale, in 2007, on 21 September, 27.6 million people from 200 countries did something for Peace Day. In 2007, according to the UN, over 100 million people were active on Peace Day, in 192 countries. There were life-saving initiatives in 14 countries, and over 80 activities in Afghanistan alone where 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio.
Peace is not just an idea, it’s a possibility. It starts with where we live, it starts with one day. Visit the Charleston site at http://www.bepeaceful.org!

I am always looking for ways to send cool email greeting cards - especially since Apple discontinued the eCard service on the .Mac service, now Mobile Me. And I don’t always want cute little kittens or mushy hearts or those two weird little Hoops and YoYo guys from wherever they come from. Gimme something edgy and cool, but that I can still send to the office. (OK, I do tend to push it a bit there.)
Today I found a site called Vidigreet. There is a free card you can send, and that card changes every week. So although aren’t a lot of free ones to send, if you don’t send that many it still work. And some of the other cards on there are simply hilarious - although there are the ones that certainly push that workplace boundary, like the vibrator girl. (No, not really what you are thinking.)
They have the standard categories like “birthday”, “congratulations”, “I love you”, and “sorry”. But hey also have cool areas like “messing with you”, “gay”, and “flirt”. Again, what I really like about this place is that the ecards are original and edgy, not the standard fare. Would be great if they were all free, but then wouldn’t everything?
So anyway, I still mourn the loss of Apple’s .Mac ecards, but at least for the time being I have found a pretty funny alternative. And if you have a better option for me, please leave a comment and let me know!
