Making The Break

Published by Michael at 10:27 am under General, Technical, Writing

This hereby serves as my official notice – just in case you hadn’t already guessed – I am striking out on my own. Yes, I am leaving my current position and going into business for myself providing computer consulting, development, and instructional services. When I walk out of my office on November 7th, I will be walking into the full time (and more) world of Palmettobug Digital. Oh, and I will be spending the next few days painting and cleaning up the new home office.

There are many reasons for this, but the most important thing is that I am totally excited about the future again. I had gotten down in a lot of ways recently, but the old energy has returned and I am raring to go! I already have a number of clients lined up, including doing some work for my current employer, and I am developing ways to gather more. Every piece of this project – from the marketing to the actual work is engaging to me right now. I am actually finding it hard to go to bed and sleep because my mind keeps racing. Truthfully, I haven’t been this energized in years.

So, please wish me well and stay tuned. Also, please check out my site at Palmettobug.com and let me know what you think. It is a constantly evolving work in progress. And if you need any of the services I am offering, or know someone who does, I would love to hear from you!

And by the way, love this video!

    Good for you – when I became a solo entrepreneur earlier this year it was the BEST thing I ever did!

    Welcome to the wonderful world of the self-employed! I’d like to think my many words of wisdom pushed you over the edge, but I have a feeling you were already committed to jumping off the cliff some time ago. So, I guess what you are saying… if any of us have questions about our screwed up computers, you are our “go-to” guy. Let’s get this out of the way now — how much do you charge and do you accept credit cards?

    Seriously, good luck and I hope you don’t forget us when your rich and famous. :)

    @Heather – Thanks!

    @jacqueline – Excellent! I appreciate the encouragement and wish you all the continued best.

    @Snow – I am sure it had a lot to do with you! You are a great example. And yes, of course I will be your go-to guy. Just send me an email, post a twitter, or give me a call. And I can do Google Checkout or PayPal, so feel free to charge away. ;)

    You know I don’t twitter… well, I tried (again) a couple of days ago to be part of the mainstream, but it didn’t still work for me, so I deleted my account. Just a rebel, I guess. :)

    About leaving your job — I did the same thing about 2-1/2 years ago (spent 25 years as a fraud investigator for a large insurance company, loved the job, but corporate politics forced my hand, so I quit…), I was scared shitless at the time, but with much support from my family, I now realize what a blessing it has been. There have been some major adjustments along the way, but I think I am a much better person now overall. I’m not living in two separate worlds any more… just one. It’s very grounding.

    Mike, I checked out your site, Palmettobug.com (hey, you asked us to!) — one suggestion, if I might. I would put your “about” page on your home page — it has a lot of great information about what you are trying to achieve and what you do — I think that is the most important point you would want to get across at a surfer’s first glance.

    Just my humble opinion, sir. Rock on.

    @Snow – thanks for the continued support and input. You are absolutely correct. When I first did that design, my emphasis was different. Now, as I go into this and reconsider the site, I need to take off most if not all of the ads, focus the attention on what I have to offer, and make the blog entries more like news and articles.

    @A – Thanks! It is indeed good – though a bit disconcerting. I haven’t felt it in quite a while.
