I really liked this entry. There is something to be said about people who are different in different areas of their life. How can you expect to be taken seriously if you represent an idea, but shy away from it in other areas. Then again, I wouldn't necessarily want my work looking into my personal sites or social networks.

I am somewhat amazed at how much information some people write about themselves on the various social networks. My rule of thumb -- would I be embarrassed if my spouse, my mom or my kids read this? If the answer is no -- then it's probably ok to proceed.

My cousin and I had a conversation like this this week, about people who separate their work & personal persona entirely. It's absurd - it's a lie. I sometimes say things on my social networking sites that I might not say directly to a boss' face, but nothing that I'm ashamed of them knowing I say in my personal time. Does that make sense? The way I am is still the same at work & at home, just a bit more "professional" at work -- but that doesn't mean I'm nervous of an employer finding out that I whine about my mom on my Twitter or that I took a picture with a giant margarita in New Orleans. This is off topic a bit, I realize, but... yeah, the Internet is a beautiful thing. People ask me, "Aren't you nervous about putting so much of yourself our there?" but I'm not; if I met you in person, I'd put the same out there. It is what it is, and I am always what I am. Nice post.
